[1943 – Steve Rogers goes down in the water outside Iceland. The Tesseract is recovered by Howard Stark, but there is no sign of Captain Rogers.

SHIELD elected to contract out to try and replace what they’d lost. Most of the contracts were with reliable and reputable, but not all of them were ethical as they could have liked. This included a small firm in Wyoming working on a genetic engineering project called Manticore.

2000 – Manticore brought its first batch of X5 series transgenics to term. They were arguably their biggest success with this project, despite small malfunctions such as seizures, and other genetic anomalies.

2009 – The Alpha unit of the X5 series escapes from Manticore’s Wyoming facility. They are never fully recovered.

At the same time, a terrorist group sets off an electromagnetic pulse that wipes out America’s financial information and launches the country into an economic depression unlike anything that America has seen in the past seventy years. This event, which will eventually become colloquially known as the Pulse, brings a new age of corruption to the US, where a lot of government programs are eliminated, reallocated and reorganized, including SHIELD.

Manticore takes advantage of the situation, and acquires both SHEILD’s funding and any other projects they were working on. The Tesseract, however, has been reclaimed into private hands, and nowhere to be found.

(Read: Tony Stark probably has it. Which is good, because Manticore having the Tesseract would be REALLY, REALLY BAD.)

2012 – Manticore finds the body of Captain Steve Rogers, and is pleasantly surprised to find he’s still alive, just hibernating. They recover his body and anything left of the ship, and bring him back to their lab in Wyoming. Since they want to get to the bottom of what makes him tick, but don’t want to deal with unimportant ethical things like consent, they keep him on ice for a while.

(Plus, they want to test how much strain his body can actually take and they don’t want to have to worry about him destroying the lab. As far as they’re concerned, it’s a win-win.)

2020 – A group of rogue X5s from the Alpha unit attack the Wyoming lab, destroying their DNA lab. In the process, X5 452 also known as Max Guevara, was captured after suffering a gunshot wound to the heart. She was pronounced KIA upon arrival to the med lab, but was saved when her fellow unit member, X5 599 supplied a heart for her with via gunshot wound to the head. X5 599’s body was taken to the cybernetics lab for further study. After recovering from her transplant, X5 452 was reindoctrinated and sent to join the rest of her unit.

This was probably the biggest mistake Manticore ever made.

After escaping again from Manticore’s Wyoming facility, X5 452 revealed the existence of Manticore through a journalism hack by a news feed known only as “Eyes Only.” As a result, Manticore was forced to cauterize their Wyoming facility, including all the transgenics housed at the facility. X5 452 returned to free her fellow transgenics, and in the process she discovered Captain Rogers, housed in one of Manticore’s labs, completely unconscious.

All of this is how Logan Cale, aka Eyes Only, wound up with a super soldier who had been missing for seventy years in his guest room, and a worried transgenic pacing in the living room. It hadn’t taken much for Logan to hack in and find Steve’s records. The idea that Manticore had kept an actual human like this is even more uncomfortable than some of the things Manticore had done to her, never mind the fact that she wasn’t even sure he was going to wake up.

What she did know, however, is that if he did, it wasn’t going to be easy, so having someone who was not a guy in a wheelchair around might not be such a bad thing.]

[What's this you may ask?

This is Elena Gilbert sneaking into Matt Donavan's house for reasons that have yet to be disclosed. She's carrying a bag full assorted teenage things, including movies, junk food and maybe even a little booze.

The thing is, it's Matt Donavan's birthday, and with everything going on with Klaus, it would have probably been easier if she'd just let it slip by with just a happy birthday in the hallways, but Matt has been through so much lately, and she wanted to surprise him.

Which is why she's putting her breaking and entering skills to work and making herself at home in his living room. She's eighty-five percent sure he's at work.

That's not nearly as sure as she should be.]

[The super solider is blissfully aware of how the world changed during his slumber. In the passing years all he's seen is endless darkness. It was peaceful in a way; certainly a better alternative to reality. It would have broken his heart to see the world he fought so hard to better had gone the other way when Steve presumed he would be old and grey. Of course the chances of that happening for him were unlikely. Thanks to Erksine, it seems he would always have the means to become Captain America and fight to save the world whenever the need arose. The time to recognize that truth is coming quickly as he starts to come out of his hibernation.

It is the pacing that starts to bring Steve's consciousness to the surface. The repetitive noise has no place in the black, dreamless world he's been trapped in all this time. Unconsciously, Steve wants find the source of it. It is a slow process commanding his limbs into action while coming out of his sleep, but not as long as it should be. Again, Erksine had seen to that.

Bright blue eyes flutter open and stare straight ahead at the ceiling. He doesn't know where he is or should be. That thought alone makes him sit straight up out of minor panic. It all floods back then; the death of Schmidt, his call to Peggy and the crash. He promised her a date. Strangely enough out of all of it, the date is what seems important. He had to find out where this is so he could reach Peggy.

Carefully, he starts to move out of the bed. Sneaking out of the room seemed like the best course of action while he has no idea where he is. It's not like he left friendly territory.]

[Max picks up on the movement in the guest room, and stills. So far he doesn't seem to be moving quickly. She isn't sure if that's a good or bad sign, but she'll figure it out soon enough.

She glances over to Logan with a nod.]

He's awake.

[with that, the man in the wheelchair will disappear into his office, leaving Max and Steve to talk, science project to science project.]

Try not to break too much of the furniture.

[While it is true Matt works a lot of hours even he wouldn't be there on his birthday. This is mostly because his boss sent him home. Working on your birthday is apparently frowned upon at the Mystic Grill. He's disappointed to be missing out on the much needed distraction.

Matt can't imagine the others will remember his birthday with the almost daily life and death situations being heaped onto them thanks to Klaus. There is also the fact this will be his first birthday without his older sister. For all her flaws, Vicki knew how keep him smiling on his special day. To say he's feeling lonely and little bit sorry for himself because he can't get that this year is an understatement.

He might have kept with his pity party plans if you know some girl he used to be in love with hadn't broken into his house. That is side eye worthy behavior, Elena. What are those Salvatores teaching you when he isn't around??? Let him just set down his keys somewhere and stare at you.]

Elena. ... Did I leave the door open? [He knows that isn't the case fyi.]

No ... not exactly.

[They have been teaching her terrible things, Matt. But she swears she only uses her newfound illegal skill set for good.

Also, she may have remembered where you kept your spare key. Even if it feels like forever ago, it really hadn't been that long since they were dating and this wouldn't have been weird. In fact, he might have actually been happy to see her one, instead of looking at her like the dubious criminal she is.]

I just ... I wanted to surprise you.

[because she didn't forget. She couldn't forget. It was Matt and after everything they've been through, he still mattered. He was always going to matter.]

[That won't be the case for long. Steve is picking up the pace as he heads for the door. He stops there, pressing himself against the wall, and listens. Yeah there's no way he'll be running out if everyone is speaking German on the other side of the door.]

[Nope. No German. Just your regular, every day English.

Or English with Max's own street kid twist, but still English. She hears his pace quicken, and she tenses, just a hair.]

Hey, Logan. Got anything to eat? I'm starving.

[once she's done, she eases her way across the floor, moving with as much feline grace as she can muster. It takes a lot of skill to move quietly in combat boots, but somehow she manages to do it.

She meets the opposite side of the wall, waiting by the door to see if soldier boy will come out swinging.]

[This would be the 'oh' moment. Things might be crazy, but Elena is still Elena. She would be the one to remember today. If he hadn't been so focused on what was missing he'd have realized that sooner.]

Sorry... you just surprised me. [Matt laughs.] Should I come back after you're ready?

[she grins before shaking her head.]

I didn't have much. But I do have those cheesey sci-fi movies you like, and popcorn and tequila.

[if they're going to do booze, they're going to do it her way.]

[Steve is confused by what he catches through the door. HYDRA wasn't employing women last he checked ~~in this universe anyways~~. Her English didn't sound off even if they did. Did he make it to America somehow? If he did, who has him? There's just too many things that didn't add up. Coming out peacefully and searching for answers might be the best solution since there seems to be no immediate danger so Steve goes for it.

He slowly turns the knob and gently pushes against the door frame enough to peek through. He hopes to get a good look at the room before doing anything else.]

[Max is planted up against the wall when she hears the door open. Logan is in his Fortress of Solitude, and so all Steve will probably see unless he looks directly to his right right out the gate is an empty living room in a fairly high class apartment.]

[Matt grins. Cheesy sci-fi movies? Things really were looking up.] Yeah? [He'll be reaching over to inspect that collection.] And they're not cheesy. They're classics.

[Let him live in denial on his birthday, Elena.]

[Fine. Just because it's his birthday.]

Right. Classics. That's what I meant.

[That seems too good to be true after the final fight with HYDRA. Steve can't exactly start knocking things over and picking a fight because something seemed fishy. He keeps looking, his gaze moving from left to... the pretty lady wearing combat boots. He... really didn't see that one coming.]

... Ma'am.

[Matt pulls out The Fifth Element complete with Bruce Willis with Milla Jovovich with orange hair... because you know that screams classic movie if you're a teenage boy.] Oh come on. You can't tell me this is not a classic.

I don't think that word means what you think it means.

[She teases because she cares, Matt, and this is feeling almost normal.]

[There's an eyebrow raise at that, and she shakes her head. She's going to nip that in the bud right off the bat.]

Max. Not ma'am.

Sorry, Max. [He straightens up. Steve is no less confused, but if she's correcting names chances are this isn't going to end in a fight which is fortunate; he really wouldn't want to fight a girl.] ... Where are we?

[Matt makes a face. How dare you doubt the classic status of Bruce Willis, Elena!] Hey, you can't use lines from Princess Bride against me.

[Let's be real Caroline probably made him watch it and then he secretly fell in love with Inigo Montoya and Westley.]

[So let's say, for the purposes of this AU, that Tess and Elektra were both trained by the same badass. Or, at least, sort of. Carter Bowfry was a student of Elektra's teacher who quit for his own reasons and came up with a program of his own. Elektra and Tess met in professional circles, bonded a little, and occasionally get together for a drink.

Which is what Tess is waiting for now, sitting on a stool in a Metropolis bar and sending off enough Ice Queen waves to repel anyone else who might be interested in trying to gain her attention. Her phone is off, her company is in Oliver's (supposedly) capable hands, and she is going to take the night to relax.]

[Elektra doesn't care for this city. There's too many people here who don't know how to mind their own business. When those people take issue with the kind of business she engages in things can get messy. She's been lucky so far and this woman is worth the risk. Elektra can count on one hand the amount of times she's found someone that could relate to her.

She's not going to throw that away because of some busy bodies in spandex.

Elektra slips into the bar quietly. It doesn't take her long to reach Tess. She always cheats by projecting herself in before ever physically entering. Elektra takes the stool next to Tess without so much as a glance or hello. Half the fun of this was not being obligated to do meaningless things.]
