[The one downside of believing that you can do everything yourself is that when you've pissed off everyone that cares about you and you find yourself actually alone, you get held hostage by magical plants that require the help of another person to escape from. Hope is almost certain that the universe is trying to tell her something when she gets trapped under a tree full of mistletoe that seems to have been enchanted somehow, and she hasn't quite figured out how to dispel it.

It's frustrating. She can't even burn the tree down because magic is protecting it. Rude.

The other thing that's working against her, however, is that she's warned away anyone who happens to have come down the thing dirt road leading to the next village. Not that there have been many, given that this is one of the smaller provinces of the kingdom, but there have been some. She knows she should just let one of them help her, but control issues.

She has them.

Catching the sound of footsteps as she leans back against the bark of the tree, she makes sure the edge of her self-imposed prison is still lined in chalk and she calls out to get the person's attention.]

truth be told, he's barely spoken to anyone in days, weeks. on the lam isn't a phrase he's familiar with, but it's what he's doing; staying on the move, not lingering in any one village long enough to attract notice. moving on, moving quickly, when he can. there are a lot of things he's running from, some he's only starting to become aware of. and so he's kept his interactions with others fairly minimal, perfunctory. brief conversations when absolutely necessary — usually room and board-adjacent — and little else.

so it's a surprise when a strange girl calls out to him. he looks towards her, briefly startled, before he registers what she actually said. his eyebrows furrow as he looks from her to the circle and back. ]

[Apparently, even if you're only a tangential member of the Underground, you get invited to Crash's Non-Denominational Winter Holiday Extravaganza. Christmas, Hanukkah, Beltane, Kwanza, all rolled into one so no one is left out and everyone is confused. Honestly, Melissa thinks it's just an excuse to have a party and give people presents, but she's not going to complain about being invited out somewhere.

She works in a hospital and her partner travels a lot, so she doesn't really spend a lot of time out. Never mind whatever supernatural shenanigans happen to be underfoot. It's nice to just relax a little, even if she feels a great deal older than a lot of the participants.

She takes a sip of the punch that Chris hands her, and almost winces at the burn from the alcohol as she pulls back.]

[One thing he and Katherine do have in common is their expensive taste. Fortunately, Damian usually has the money to support it. And during the holidays, there are times when the weather dictates that they should be off the road. In anticipation of a blizzard coming through, Damian books a week at a plush ski resort not far from where they are to ride out the weather.

He pushes open the door to the room and gestures for her to move in ahead of him.]

Your room, my lady.

[It's the first industry party she's found herself at since her divorce, and she can tell from the way the room's looking at her that the topic of conversation is going to be her. Hard not to be when your divorce is so messy you lose custody of your child.

It's so tempting, to just rumor her problems away. I heard a rumor that you all minded your own fucking business. But she's trying to be better than she was, to prove that she can be a good mother. So she bites her tongue, pastes on a smile and wanders off to another corner where she doesn't have to talk to anyone.

But she misses the fact that this particular corner happens to have mistletoe hanging overhead.]

[Crash's Non-Denominational Winter Holiday Extravaganza is complete with all kinds of corners, including a place labeled Consentual Mistletoe. More specifically charmed to give a little shock to anyone who tries to force the issue, it's for whoever wants to make out to do so in an appropriate Christmas fashion.

That being said, Alexander doesn't think that Jackson would object to his plans. He's a few drinks in and enjoying the ambiance and festive cheer. Things can be serious a lot of the time, but he always enjoys taking moments like this to relax. He tugs his boyfriend in the direction of the holiday decor. The place itself is metallic fake tree attached to the wall, with mistletoe hanging from the branches overhead. Alexander backs up until his back hits the tree and he grins.]

Oh whoops. Looks like I'm under the mistletoe.

[Some things in the bunker probably shouldn't be poked at. Elena learns that very quickly when she's looking through some of the boxes in the library and one of them happens to slip open. Some green leaves tied with a red ribbon come flying out, hovering in mid-air like a fly before zipping up to the rafters out of view.

She squints at it, confused, but as she starts to step forward to try and find a ladder or something similar, she finds that she can't move. She's frozen in place, and she's not entirely sure why.

Then she squints up at the leaves, now that it's staying still.]

Is that mistletoe?

[Kady tends to move carefully around Chicago around this time of year, because she's been around long enough to know that when the rift's involved, shenanigans will be afoot. She intends to make it from her apartment to the Crowbar in one piece, and for the most part she succeeds.

She steps through the front door, and even makes it halfway to the bar, before she hears a soft jingling sound over her head. She looks up, and the mistletoe jingles at her again, almost as though it's trying to rub it in.]

One day, I'm going to catch all you little fuckers and set you on fire.

[Threatening the mistletoe doesn't help, but it at least makes her feel better.]

[What do you do when you follow a lesser known pacifist deity and are tasked by your goddess to go and try and purify a nearby forest that may or may not be loaded with magical shenanigans? More specifically shenanigans that may try to kill you and you know you don't have enough defensive spells to be able to manage alone when you don't know the lay of the land.

You hire a pretty paladin to go with you to watch your back, obviously.

Yseult came highly recommended so Rosario is confident in her choice, but she didn't realize that she would be this pretty. Given that she spends most of her time alone, at Eldath's waters, with a stack of books and not a lot of people, she had a very specific idea of what paladins would look like and that look was basically a grumpy, armored older man. She thought she might maybe have a sort of adopted father figure kind of vibe for this adventure. Instead, Yseult arrives at the inn to meet her, and she's finds herself increasingly distracted.

Fortunately, they arrive at the edge of the woods, and Rosario flashes her a smile.]

Okay. So ... the plants might be just as dangerous as any creatures in there, so be careful.

[Contrary to popular belief, Neal doesn't get invited to a lot of Christmas parties. Mostly because they know he'll say no, as they're outside his two-mile radius. He would argue that it's still nice to be invited, but that's just him. As a result, June encouraged him to have a party of his own, and he loved that idea.

He invites both his thief friends and his cop friends and refuses to tell anyone who is who. They'll figure it out soon enough. June goes all out with the decorations, and as everyone starts to arrive, the mingling begins.

He catches sight of Anna out of the corner of his eye, and quickly catches her elbow before she wanders too far into the doorframe where the mistletoe is hanging.]

I'd keep your eyes up. June is very traditional with her Christmas decorations.

[ Parties in general aren't Anna's scene. Let alone ones where there's a high likelihood that someone tries to make a move because of a hanging plant.

But Jo had twisted her arm enough, so here she was. In an expensive, tastefully decorated townhouse by herself, feeling awkward. Eva at least made sure that Anna didn't show up looking like she was still at work. A simple long-sleeved maroon dress that actually fits instead of trying to hide her curves, simple black heels, long hair curled and pinned to one side. She's even wearing make-up and ditched the glasses. She's almost a different person.

Almost.

The grip on her elbow catches her attention immediately and she skids to a halt, shooting a look up at Neal questioningly. Then he explains. ]

[Verdant is crowded tonight, full of people intending to drink and dance before needing to return to their families for much more tepid holiday celebrations. Laurel just wants to be somewhere where she doesn't have to think, so she weaves through the people, wanting to just be in the press of it.

Something catches her eye, and she turns, seeing an unfamiliar face in the corner. Not that anyone here is familiar, really, but if she'd seen him before, she would have remembered him. Weaving her way through the crowd to the bar, she slides up next to him with a smile.]

Come here often?
