Mermen aren't supposed to wonder what happens above the surface of the water.
There's nothing interesting up there. All the bobbles and shells are below the surface, and that's all that merfolk are supposed to care about. Their hearts are as cold as the ocean, and they aren't meant to care. Humans are toys.
Stefan never really seems to get the message. He aches with the need to care, with the need to see what's above the surface. Damon mocks him for it, teases him about his obsession with the humans, but he can't help himself. They are a thing he can never truly understand, and watching them is like catching a glance into a world he's been denied.
Even if it hurts, he watches.
One day, as he swims to the surface, he spots her on the beach. Merfolk are beautiful as a rule, but there's something about her that's ... different. She's warm, and golden, and the way she laughs makes him ... feel.
He uses his arms to brace himself against a rock, watching her day after day as she sits on the beach with her friends, until the day she looks at him. Her eyes drift out across the water, and when they meet his, she smiles. At first he isn't sure if she's really looking at him, but once she realizes she is, he can't help the way the smile stretches across his face.
She glances away, and he dives back into the water again, letting the cold rush of the salt water surround him. The deeper he goes, the more the warmth starts to fade away, but it doesn't disappear completely.
After all, there has to be something to bring him back tomorrow.
