damon/elena ~ angels and demons for lanapedia

There are some days when she feels like Damon doesn't see her, he just sees her vessel.

It shouldn't matter. She's supposed to be there for Stefan, to help him steer his fate to something good instead of something terrible. It's not easy. He struggles with his rage in a way that she hasn't anticipated, but she does her best to keep him on the path.

The vessel is not her choice. She can feel the edges of Katherine's presence within the girl's body, and wishes she could wipe them away, but some scars even an angel can't heal.

There are also some moments when she's left alone with Damon in the house, while Stefan is out living his life. She stays in the living room, mostly, having no where else to go. She's not as comfortable as she should be around people -- she mostly has just been around the Salvatores, and they don't function as normal humans should.

The living room is where Damon finds her one night. She's reading, having selected one of the books from Stefan's room to keep herself entertained, and he makes a face at her, before stalking over to the mini bar.

"Don't you have anywhere else to be?"

"No," she replies simply. "Stefan ... is on a date. I do not think I would be welcome."

Damon's lips press into a thin like as he tosses the glass back, before looking at her. In fact, he stares at her for a very long time before he speaks again.

"Can I ask you something?"

She closes her book before looking up at him with a nod. "Of course."

"Why that body?" He crosses his arms in front of his chest. "Why Katherine's face?"

Elena's shoulders drop slightly as she sighs, before getting to her feet. "I can't choose simply any body, Damon. Angels can only choose vessels from specific bloodlines, and require consent. I ... can only assume that Katherine knew this when she choose this body."

"And you couldn't pick another one?"

She shakes her head. "Her mother was dead. She had no children. She was my only option, and she said yes. I wish this weren't the case, but it's all I can do, Damon."

She notices the way his fingers tighten around his glass, and she sighs.

"I know you didn't ask for this. To be brought into this. But what is coming could cost your brother his soul, Damon. What's coming for him -- he is going to need you." She presses her lips together. "Whatever ... animosity or feelings that you may have for Katherine, for this body ... all I can do is ask that you put it aside for the sake of your brother."

"Of course. It's always all about Stefan." He turns away from her, tossing back the drink again, and Elena can't help but sigh.

"I do not intend to make things hard for you."

And with that, she disappears.

Angels can't see the future, but two months later, when Damon is dead and Stefan is leaving his soul at the crossroads, she almost wishes she could.
