"I know it's weird, but those came first and they're generally considered the better part of the whole series." Kira shrugged a shoulder before glancing over at her.
"I like Star Wars, but I'm not really the best person to explain all the details. That's more Stiles' thing. I figured we'd try some Doctor Who or some of the zombie movies I had lying around."
"It's ...well it's Doctor Who. Basically an alien who uh....travels in time and space and kind of takes random people along for varying periods of time. Just... you'll see." She put one of the DVDs in before shifting to settle back on the couch once she'd hit play.
"There are four different incarnations in the current run though. We're starting with Nine."
There's a very long pause as she considers all of that, before wrinkling her nose and turning to face her. "Are we starting in the middle again?" Because you can see how that didn't work out well for her the last time.
"No, no. This is a reboot more than the Star Wars thing. It went off the air for a long time and then they started this run. It's a good start for someone who's got no knowledge of the series, to be honest." Because Classic Who is a beast of a different sort.
"The Doctors are generally younger in this run too, At least until you get to Twelve. He's close in age to the Classic Doctors."
"Right." She makes a face again, before shifting closer to Kira so that she could see the screen better. "Maybe it will make more sense if we just start watching it."
Malia just nods and settles in closer, watching as things started to play out further. At first she was confused, and trying to sort out the words from the differences in accents but she starts to fall into it eventually.
"I think it's because he keeps his hair so short." Kira's gaze was on the screen, although she knew the episode by heart. "The first couple of episodes are more establishing the characters anyway."
"Oh." Malia nods slowly as she takes that in, tipping her head to the side, as she watches some more. There's something weird with living mannequins and she isn't sure she likes it, but she's giving it a shot.
"Not always, but the next one is generally nicer and then Eleven is ...a whole different type." Kira glanced at her.
"We can skip to some of the scarier episodes if you want. This one is pretty tame compared to some of them." Although admittedly, they lost a lot of their scariness after you'd faced down real monsters.
Her eyebrows go up a bit at that, before she looks at her curiously. "Why would I have a problem with scary?" She's not exactly the timid type. There's a very high chance that's why it's scary would go over her head to boot, as she's not exactly the best at reading between the lines, but she doesn't have a problem with scary episodes.
"I didn't say you would. I mean, the Weeping Angels freaked me out pretty badly the first time I saw the episode, but I was kind of a different person then." Kira shrugged a shoulder.
"Right." That makes sense. Malia could have seen this before she became a coyote and gotten freaked out, but with the way she's been rewired, it's hard to really say one way or the other how she feels about all of this. "I don't know. I don't really get the people stuff either so maybe it's just another side effect of being a coyote."
She huffs for a moment, because explaining her own feelings is hard enough, but explaining what she feels about fictional people's is worse. "Like - why does the Doctor keep telling Jack to stop it?"
Malia shrugs. "It's usually right after he introduces himself to someone." Is the Doctor saying he should just not talk to people in general? That seems ... odd.
"That's uh...well that's because Jack has a lack of discrimination on who or what he's attracted to. He's um...you've heard of the term pansexual right?" This isn't an awkward conversation at all and Kira's glancing at the laptop screen for a moment before turning back to Malia.
"Basically, it's more meant to keep Jack from flirting with anything that moves. I'll show you Torchwood sometime so you can see Jack without someone trying to keep him in line."
It takes a minute, before it hits her and she nods. "Oh, so it's a sex thing." Not that Malia has a problem with pansexuals - her sexual orientation is ?????-Stiles has a cute everything-Kira smells really good-?????? at the moment so it's not like she can judge. "Does the Doctor not want him to have sex?"
"Well, not when they're in the middle of fighting whatever the enemy of the week is, at least." The Doctor is honestly kind of a prude in that sense, although there's the stuff with Ten and Rose and then Eleven and River...
And the bit with the TARDIS.
"Ten is a bit more lax when it comes to Jack's flirting but then again by the time they have most of their interaction, Jack's already kind of involved with someone else.
Nine's the one he actually kisses so who knows. Each Doctor kind of has different standards about behavior and the like though. Nine is more cynical and angry. Ten is more complicated and Eleven is...
Well Eleven is Eleven. "Which is pretty much all she can say about him. Eleven is kind of a headcase in ways Nine and Ten weren't.
She considers for a moment before nodding. That's certainly fair enough. "I wouldn't want him having sex if we were being attacked either." Priorities. Or something like that.
"Yeah, neither would I." But then she's not sure she'd want to get involved in that whole world anyway. Doctor Who stuff tended to accrue a body count she didn't even want to think about.
"But I'm not sure I'd trade anything we've faced to deal with what they do either. The Daleks alone.." Not to mention the Weeping Angels, Cybermen and everything else.
She gives a small shrug as she diverts her eyes back to the screen again. "I don't think it really matters one way or the other. They have bad guys, we have bad guys. What they do isn't really the point. It's just the point that the good guys are supposed to beat them, even if that isn't how it actually works."
"Yeah but usually ours don't operate on a genocidal scale or any scale as large as some of the races in Doctor Who, is what I meant. We're good with what we handle, but I wouldn't count on our odds against an army of Daleks or Cybermen." Kira shrugs and leans back, gaze on the screen.
"There's no way we could pull together the kind of numbers to face that sort of threat."

Some of them did, anyway.
