The funny thing is he never worries what's happening to Laurel while she's on the run. She's a superhero with a team that actually shows up 90% of the time. If anything she's in a better position than him to survive the mess he's uncovering. One epic adventure ending in an extended surgery later, his opinion has not changed. He's positive she's fine physically. The rest? Not so much.

Laurel has lost too many people. He can't make her wait and wonder if she's lost another one. After some begging, Sam brings him his phone, plugs in his headset, and gives Steve privacy as he calls back the burner number he suspects must be hers. He realizes by now Natasha probably updated her, but he needs to do this. He's confident she's alright, but that doesn't mean he is without concern at all.

"Hey." He sounds drowsy and out of it, but he's alive. That's the best any of them can hope for.

"Hey."

Her voice is soft and full of relief, just knowing that he's alive is a step up on what she had previously. She's still worried, and will be until he's standing in front of her. But for right now, she'll settle for this.

"Are you okay?"

"Uh yeah-" There's a voice in the background going 'Are you kidding me, Rogers?' loudly. Say hello to Sam, hunny. Steve audibly sighs. Okay so maybe that isn't the most truth thing he could have said. "I'm better now that I'm talking to you." A door opens and closes in the background. Finally some privacy. Steve doesn't take advantage of it if only because he knows Sam was right to call him out.

"Sorry about that. My new friend is trying to keep me honest. I'm making friends now which means I'll probably be leaving D.C. soon. I had a bit of a rough few days. I think it's safe to say I'm unemployed and pretty homeless right about now. I might have to crash on your couch for a bit." He's rambling, but what else can he do? They've got a lot of ground to cover here.

"Well, first of all, I'm glad you're making friends." Friends are important and she'll likely enjoy meeting Sam officially, once everything calms down. And she can tell that there's a lot going on, because she has some stuff to tell him too.

"Second of all, I'm not sure my apartment's safe at the moment. They've got me hanging out in a safe house, but I wouldn't mind the company."

And by safe house she means the Arrow Cave, but she's not going to say that on an open line at the moment. Nazis could be listening.

"Me too. They come in handy when Nazis are trying to kill you." Steve responds with no hint of irony. He has no illusions about his situation. He survived because he teamed up with Natasha and Sam. He lets out a soft sigh. He wants her here, but it is a risk she doesn't need to take.

"I'll come see you after I get out of the hospital."

The fact that Steve is in the hospital should be considered a concern enough, and a rather large indicator of the beating that he took. He can't see her worried face over the phone, but it's definitely in her tone when she responds.

"Take it easy, okay? I'll be here. You don't need to rush."

It's telling that he isn't already getting off the phone to go to her side. Steve actually thinks he needs to take her up on that offer. He's never been more unhappy with himself for it. "Are you sure? I don't want you to worry."

"I will be fine. I know you can heal fast, but as long as I know you're alive, we can figure out the rest." She's sure he's got a lot of important things to deal with, when all is said and done. Watching the news makes that much clear.

"I will be here when you're ready. Just make sure you're ready." And now, on to lighter subjects. "Tell me about your new friend."

His sigh of relief is audible. Now's not the best time to be on bad terms with your girl even if all that matters is that she's safe. "Yes, ma'am." The smile in his voice is pretty clear as he continues. "Sam is great. I met while I was out running. He's been incredible; most loyal friend a guy can ask for. I think I love him." That's not totally the drugs talking.

Maybe it isn't, but it makes her laugh anyway, because that kind of affirmation about something he's only recently meant is probably only something that Steve could say and still be just as earnest.

"I don't blame you. He sounds like a pretty good guy. Maybe you should bring him when you come to visit."

Steve chuckles. It's good they're on the same page here. He's dying to drag Sam over to meet all the important people aka Laurel and Thea. "That's the plan. We should order out at that place. The one with the good fries? He earned the good fries." He can't even offer to cook since he's ninety percent sure that Sam is better at it after eating that breakfast.

"I will make sure he gets the good fries. And maybe even a milkshake." As long as someone cooks, because that person should not be Laurel. It just isn't one of her strong suits. "Just let me know when you're on the way, and I'll make sure it's all ready."
