[The sentence makes him stop, because he had plans for this evening. He had things he wanted to say, that he's been sitting on for a long time trying to find the right romantic moment and knowing they had the time to wait. It's usually one disaster after the other with the Mikaelsons, but Neal thinks he's been more than patient.

He waited five years, helping Hayley look for cures they weren't sure they would ever find. He waited seven, knowing that after just losing her family, throwing herself a wedding would be too much on the bitter side of bittersweet. He honestly doesn't even care so much about the wedding, wouldn't care if it weren't for the fact that he's seen her collection of wedding gowns.

He wants to try and give her what she wants. It's what he thought he was doing.]

Last I checked, there were very few things we couldn't have if we put our minds to it.

Quite the contrary, there are many things we cannot have.

Improvising only gets you so far. It does not change the facts.

And what facts are those?

[He thinks that the important facts - the facts that he loves her and is still there with her after all this time - would be enough to deal with the ones that they can improvise.]

That seems like a pretty fatalist point of view.

[By which he means he's not impressed with it. He doesn't mean to dismiss her outright, because he himself has had his moments where he feels like the world is closing in on him and he's never going to have his freedom, but he and Rebekah have been happy for so long, he thought she might have left that idea behind.

Or, at least, he thought they were happy.]

Whatever happened to the idea of making our own happiness?
