[ Devon. Devon needed some time away. What was the saying? I need a vacation from my vacation? Yeah. That was it. The wedding had been lovely, though he's sure that nothing really fit their "Mad Men" theme they claimed to have had. But, he was a romantic and he'd teared up and danced, he'd definitely danced. He'd even given his mother a dance because yep, he was that guy. He was also the SGWM there. Single gay white male. His cousin had gone through Second City. There were no homosexual improvisers? No matter.

He contemplates going with the younger set to some karaoke bar or after party or something. But, right now he wants to quit while he's mildly ahead. He rides the shuttle back to the hotel, helps his mother, her sister and his uncle evade his grandparents so they don't join them at the hotel bar... and then he decides not to join them. It's funny how that works.

Stella and Phoebe have grown up and yet they still pull away from their parents. Sure, everyone loves everyone - even if Stella judges and Phoebe has a bit of a materialistic side - but, they need their time away.

And so does he, gosh darnit!

So, he walks, keeping in mind where his hotel is.

He ends up in a bar. It's not far. It's divier then his usual tastes. But, it's cheap booze. So, sold!

He did his usual scan of the bar. Where's the best place to sit vs. were there cute guys to sidle up to. The answer tonight was no. And there was an older crowd on the one side. So, he leaned against the bar next to Kate, deciding to not take a seat at the bar, but to stand. Because that's how he rolls and then he wouldn't have to commit.

He orders a shot of tequila and whatever draft is on tap. And then he turns his head.

Great. She looks -- is she alright? ]

[No. No she is not alright. She is never going to be alright again. Kate turns to look at him when she hears the bar stool being pulled out before speaking.]

Are you straight?

[To be fair, she would have asked pretty much anyone that question right now.]

[ Is it the outfit? because the invitation said Mad Men style and his hair is gelled back for the party. ]

I don't really know if there's a right answer. While, I'm not, I don't know what you want me to be. Or, why you want me to be what I am or what I'm not. Is this a trick question?

[ a second passes. ]

That's a great dress. Does that tell you anything?

[She sighs heavily, before dropping her head back down against the bar.]

I needed to ask a straight guy a question. Gay guys might not be able to provide a real answer. They're generally less of a douchebag.

You'd be surprised how much of a douchebag we can really be. If you'd like, I'll tell you, honestly, how you look right now.

[ he's... trying to lighten the mood? ]

The fact that you're asking? Still makes you nicer than most straight guys I know.

Well, that might be true. But, try going to West Hollywood some time. I can help, though. I can also listen. I've been told I'm a great listener.

I just ... got out of a really long term relationship in the shittiest way, and want to drink until I can't feel my face anymore.

Well, there are pros and cons to that. Are you better off?

[she takes a breath]

Guess we've established that we're exchanging numbers. [ mostly said under his breath. ] Joke. [ another moment of silence befalls them. ] Do you still want an answer to your question?

I really would. I mean, I'd like to hope that there's a guy out there who won't lead a girl on for five years, letting her think that he's going to marry him, and then dumping her unceremoniously on her ass.

[she sighs]

But if there is no such thing, I'd like to give up the ghost and switch teams now.

I don't think it works that way. [ but. ] There are. There are ten guys out there somewhere that won't do all that for that long. Maybe, it's not so worth it to... dip into the lady pond. Especially, because history would repeat itself. Reversed.

[ wait, is he making sense? it's definitely after midnight. ] What I mean is, your desire to pull away from the familiar - guys - could blow up in your face when your new interest - girls - doesn't... [ what's the word he wants to use. ] stick. Then, you'd just be doing the same thing to a girl. And that's not fair.

So, in the end nobody wins and nobody is any happier because life is like that. [ wait... ] I feel like I was trying to make you feel better and then - didn't. Main point: guys are out there en masse.

Fair point.

[she can admit them when they happen, even when she's drunk.]

It just doesn't feel like it right now.

And it probably won't. For a while. But, tomorrow morning when you curse your inevitable hangover, it'll be a new day.

And I will be on a plane to LA.

Small world. So will I. What time?

O'Hare? [ he closes his eyes, sucking in a breath. ] Of course, it's going to be O'Hare. What I mean... my family, the rest of my family is heading back to Maryland, at ten. I'm heading back to LA. At 11:45. What are the chances?

Huh. Guess we got lucky.

Yeah. My family relocates from the West Coast - seriously, why - I don't think snow's that worth it... But, what a small world.

Are you from California?

Nah, I'm from here, but I've got family out there. I could do with something new.

Is this a sudden decision?

[She shakes her head.]

I was going out there for a job this week. But since I don't have anything to really come back to here, I might as well stay longer.
