Do you like it there? Small towns aren't always for everyone.

Sometimes. It can be too small, in a lot of ways.

Exactly. It can make you want to be anywhere but here.

But somehow, you always end up back there.

Exactly. Sometimes because it's where you need to be.

It's home. Whether you like it or not.

Hopefully sometimes the "like" outweighs the "not."

Yeah. Sometimes it does. [Not at the moment, though.]

Pretty sure you wouldn't believe half of it if I told you. [Hybrids, sire bonds, it's all pretty crazy.]

I don't know. I can believe a lot.

[He doesn't know that though. He thinks this is a more normal town than Mystic Falls. Those exist, right?]

Oh? Can you now?

Absolutely.

[she braces her hands on either side of the counter, leaning in a little so that she's at eye level.]

Well, for starters, my whole pack and my mother were murdered by a psychotic thousand year old hybrid. [It's a risk. But if she responds badly, he can compel her. The truth is he does need to tell someone.]

[There's a whole mess of emotions that cross Ruby's face as she processes that information. First, there's a small bit of longing at the mention of pack, followed by recognition, and sympathy. Losing all that family in one go has to be hard on anyone.

Then there's a second half of processing that happens afterwards, where logical part of her brain recognizes that he said pack. There are other werewolves? In this world, without magic? She can't leave the town, she knows that, not without losing who she is, but the idea that there are other wolves out there, other packs ... it's something she's wanted for a long time.

Then ... it settles simply on confusion.]

A hybrid of what?

[lockwood]

[There are other packs out there. Not a lot of them anymore, but they exist. They're out there. Not Tyler's though. They're all dead. Because he made the wrong choices. Because his mother is wrong -- he isn't a leader. He doesn't know to lead anyone.

He's surprised it's her only question, but maybe she knows more than she lets on. It's always possible.]

Half vampire, half werewolf.

[Now she's even more confused. She doesn't know much about vampires, but from what she does know about wolves -- she can't imagine what kind of a monster that would make.]

Shouldn't one cancel out the other?

You'd think that, but no.

[failwithflair]

Huh.

[She glances back to him again, tipping her head to the side.]

Why is he attacking you?

[lockwood]

I pissed him off. In his eyes, betrayed him.
