Unfortunately, Stefan doesn't come back as quickly as he would have liked. Bonnie's death means having to find a different way to put down Silas, which he stays to do but it leads to Stefan getting kidnapped by Silas, Silas pretending to be him for a while, and then being stuck in a safe for three months drowning. While Silas was great at being Stefan in Mystic Falls, Allison was a secret Stefan kept to himself so things went from regular texts and phone calls with updates to nothing at all.

By the time Stefan makes it back to Mystic Falls, it's almost Christmas and he's found out he's a doppelganger, had his memories erased, and been through far more trauma than any sane person should fairly be able to manage, but he wants, more than anything to see her so before Elena and Damon can try and convince him to stay, he's leaving again. Silas and Amara are dead - they shouldn't need him anymore.

The real problem comes once he arrives in Beacon Hills. He knows it's been months since Allison has heard any word from him, and no one in Mystic Falls mentioned having spoken to her. He arrives at her front door late in the evening on Christmas Eve, hesitating for a moment before knocking quickly before he can second guess it. He has so much explaining to do - he just hopes she'll give him a chance to.

It's been months since she heard anything from Stefan. She was worried, she was angry but mostly? She was hurt. She doesn't know what caused him to shut her out like that. Eventually she gives up. It seems clear that for whatever reason he doesn't want her in his life anymore.

She just hopes he's safe, wherever he is.

So when she hears a knock on the door on Christmas Eve she wasn't expecting him of all people. She excuses herself from where she had been watching movies with her dad and makes her way to the door, frowning when she sees who it is. That hurt renews itself, burying itself in her chest.

"Took you long enough."

He can see that she's hurt and he knew she would be. It's part of the reason why he wanted to do this in person. It's hard to really explain something like that over the phone (and part of him wanted to make sure she wouldn't hang up on him). He watches her for a moment, before taking a deep breath and nodding.

"I'm sorry." There's a beat. "It's a long story."

She's not sure she would have hung up on him. Maybe. It's probably best he came in person.

"Then we better go someplace we can talk so you can tell me."

Because her dad was never thrilled about her inviting him in and she's certainly not doing that now.

Stefan nods in agreement, and while he would prefer to be somewhere safe, he knows that Allison's house isn't necessarily the safest place for him. "Sure." He swallows before glancing towards the elevator. "We could go for a walk?"

"Sounds good." Allison grabs her coat from the closet before closing the door behing her and stepping outside.

Stefan waits for her to join him before starting to walk, sliding his hands into his pockets as they went. "When I went back for Bonnie's funeral, I found out she was trying to imprison this immortal named Silas." There's a pause, before he turns to face her more. "I explained doppelgangers to you, right?"

Allison frowns a little as he mentions that. She knows enough to know doppelgangers are never a good thing. She nods. "You did. What about them?"

"What I didn't know at the time, is that the Petrova line isn't the only line of doppelgangers. Apparently ... I'm from one too." It's something he's still trying to wrap his head around and it isn't finished doing that quite yet. "Silas is the originator of my doppelganger line and he sort of ... stole my life for a bit."

[transferee]

That's enough to make Allison pause in her steps for a moment. He's a doppelganger too? And said originator tried to steal his life? "Where were you when that happened? Why didn't you say anything, I could of helped"

"I couldn't." He answers the second question first before moving on to the first. "He locked me in a chest and dumped me at the bottom of a lake. I've spent the last three months drowning repeatedly. No one back home knew about you, which I'm kind of grateful for, because that means he couldn't play you too."

[transferee]

"So that's why you didn't respond to any of my calls or texts," She says quietly, trying to digest this new truth. She had spent all this time being angry at him -- only to learn he had been a victim of something else the entire time.

"I wish I could have helped you."

[somanyadjectives]

"I wish you could have too. Believe me." He takes a deep breath before shaking his head. "And I'm sorry, that I just dropped off the face of the earth. I didn't intend to, and I never meant to make you think that I was leaving you."

[transferee]

"I did. I thought you had just...decided I wasn't worth the time anymore." She admits, looking down at the ground for a moment. "At first I was really angry -- but then I was mostly just hurt. I didn't have a number for Damon or anyone else, I didn't know how to try to reach you."

He nods a bit, before taking another step closer. "I'm sorry. I never thought something like this would happen, and I didn't intend to put you in this position."

[transferee]

"I know you didn't -- or I know that now." It's hard to reconcile the months she spent angry and hurt with the reality of the situation -- he didn't disappear because he wanted to. He was captured. Why hadn't she even considered that an option? As a hunter it seems like an oversight now.

"How have you been holding up?"

[somanyadjectives]

He gives a small shrug. "It's ... a work in progress. But I'm glad to be back." He pauses, hesitating for a moment before reaching forward for her hand. "With you, if you'll let me."

[transferee]

Something aches in her chest when he takes her hand. It's hard to forget the months she spent hurt and angry -- but she knows now that he didn't abandon her out of choice. After everything he's been through it would be wrong to turn him away now. After a long silent moment she gives his hand a squeeze.

"Of course. It'd be nice to have you back here."

With me. is the unsaid part.

He smiles softly at that, squeezing her hand gently as he nods. "Good. Because I have a feeling that's what I need, more than anything." Maybe distance from Mystic Falls and going back to where he feels he's supposed to be will give him the chance to make amends and keep the dreams of drowning away.

"What can I do help you?" There's no way she can go back in time to help him when he was drowning all those times, but she's here now, and so is she. There has to be something she can do.

[somanyadjectives]

"Just ... be patient with me?" It's not a huge request, and something he knows she's capable of but that's all he can really say for certain that he needs right now. Patience and time for the flashbacks and nightmares to sublimate out of his system. "And if there's something more than that, I'll let you know. I promise."

[transferee]

"I think I can manage that," She says with a small smile. He's been through a lot -- she knows how hard things can be to work through sometimes. She's had her own experiences with drowning and hallucinations though -- if she can help, she wants to.

[somanyadjectives]

"Good," he says with a small smile, before taking another step closer. "And would it be okay if I kissed you?"

Because that he also missed quite a bit.

She smiles a little in return before nodding.

"I'd like that."

A wider smile stretches across his face before he steps in closer, cupping her face in his hands and leaning in to kiss her deeply.
