[Margaret Carter. Max remembered the name on the file, and her face softens a bit, because that's the hard part. All the people who would know him are dead.]

That's the thing. I can't. Probably why you're gonna wanna sit.

[It's be easy to rationalize it that a line was down or this woman was just trying to give him a scare into cooperating. He can't when she gives him a look like that. He's seen that before when a good man fell on the battlefield, when the doctor explain that his mother wasn't getting up...

He braces himself against the door. Steve is shaken. For all his pride and bravado, the thought of losing Peggy especially so soon after Bucky makes him want to curl up on the floor and never get back up again. Somehow he's still standing even though it is clear he should take Max's advice from the way the blood has drained from his face.]

... We beat them. She can't be... We beat them.

No, no -- it's not like that.

[Max very rarely reaches out and touches first, unless she's throwing a punch, but this guy looks like he needs it. She places his hands on his shoulders gently, guiding him towards Logan's couch.]

[Steve allows it. He needs something solid to steady him.] Then what happened while I was out?

[She sighs softly, before settling on the coffee table across from him. This isn't going to be easy.]

Almost eighty years passed.

The date is September 15, 2020.

[He settles his gaze on Max looking for any tell. That's not something easy to absorb right away even with proof. It'd probably take something like running out in the middle of Time Square.]

Eighty years. You're expecting me to believe I was asleep for eighty years.

[She knows it's going to be hard to believe. She has a hard time believing that he lasted in the Arctic that long, but according to Manticore's records, he did.]

More like you were frozen? This ... organization had you in stasis. They were trying to figure out what makes you tick.

[she pauses for a moment, trying to see what it would take for her to gain some ground.]

So they could make their -- my project better, I guess.

[The frozen part doesn't get a rise out of him oddly enough. It makes sense that would be the consequence of his decision to send the plane and himself into the ice to save countless lives. Someone grabbing him and experimenting afterward is the part that troubles him. Sure it happened to Bucky, but wouldn't Peggy fight tooth and nail to get him back? Surely the SSR would find out what they are up to.

All that pales to final part. He knew they'd try to make more super soldiers, but frankly Steve never expected them to succeed in his lifetime. Erksine was too ahead of the curve; one of a kind. It'd take decades to.... oh. Suddenly everything Max is saying sounds a bit more plausible. He looks surprised as the realization sinks in that this might add up... perhaps a little fearful too.

It's easier when he's positive this woman is lying to get something out of him.]

Not exactly. According to the records, you were born human and ... enhanced, I guess. I was built.

[she never had the chance to be human, even if she had gotten out of Manticore before they had the chance to turn her into a full soldier.]

They didn't get you until 2012 though, so whatever they found with you was applied more to the batches after me. I escaped in '09.

[Steve frowns. His heart is heavy when she says "built" like they were cars or bikes. He almost says that can't be right. People are people no matter how they came into the world. Instead he asks the obvious question.]

Who's they?

A group called Manticore.

[She doesn't know how connected they are or how far they go, but they're ... fairly embedded.]

[He shakes his head.] Never heard of them. Let me guess they come around after my time? [It's certainly convenient.]

[She nods, before shrugging.]

I was born in 2000? But they were developing years before that.

[She'll have to ask Joshua if he knows when he was born sometime.]

[Steve mulls this over before finally saying.] I'm going to need paperwork. Facts. I can't just take your word for it.

[He's not running for the door just yet so this is decent start.]

[Max takes a deep breath before nodding.]

Sure. Let me go see what Logan has.

[She gets up and starts to push back towards the other room.]

Are you hungry? Do you want anything?

[He shakes his head. Steve thinks even if he did need something, which he probably does, he wouldn't accept it. Erksine's serum can only offer him so much protection.]

No, ma'am.

[and with that she wanders off to dig up what Logan has on Manticore. It's going to take her a bit.]

[This is one time Steve doesn't mind sitting still and thinking. It does occur to him that now would be the time to slip out and run for the hills. He almost does. The fact is he needs time to sort things out. Running would guarantee he would never find a moment to think through the important question: was anything being told to him now real? Accepting the deaths of all dear to you and the world you willingly surrendered your life for (not that it had accepted it) is tough to put it lightly.

He's not sure even if Max left him here for years he ever could.]

[She makes her way back into the room, a stack of freshly printed pages in her hand. All the lab reports Manticore had run, all the files on her and Joshua, the first of the transgenics.

It was all there for him to look at and make of it what he would. She doesn't say anything, just hands it off to him and lets him judge for himself.]

[Steve reads as much as he can in one sitting. It is disturbing information if it's all true. It's certainly not outside the realm of possibility. HYDRA and Nazi party were all guilty of experimenting on human beings. Isn't this really the next step for someone else; the creation of beings they could toy with as they pleased?

His jaw sets and he swallows hard. He's angry because it's all too possible. Despite what he, Bucky, and so many other soldiers sacrificed to end the horrors they'd witnessed in the War, it could easily be for nothing if no one kept up the good work they did. He sets the papers down and for a moment is lost in thought before spitting out what may seem like a random question.]

Why am I here, Max?

[She shrugs a bit as she moves to sit on the edge of Logan's coffee table.]

I'm not exactly what you would call existential but as far as the science goes? I'm pretty sure the serum both slowed your ability to age, and helped preserve your body when you were on ice. I don't think guy who formulated it realized that would happen.

[oddly enough, some of the transgenics Manticore built had the opposite problem. Progeria is a bitch.]

As for why you're here, in this apartment? The people who found you, Manticore? It's gone. The facility was destroyed. I didn't really feel like testing the theory on what would happen if they decided to burn you alive. Figured that you'd probably be safer with people who didn't want to poke you with needles.

[Steve sits through that explanation, watching Max closely. He thinks he's rightfully paranoid about the intentions of a stranger, but if this checks out? Yes, he's grateful. He saw firsthand what it's like to be a cruelly treated test subject thanks to Bucky. He has no intention of living out the horror his now dead friend did. (Long dead, he realizes. Steve tries to shove down the thought.)]

So this is a rescue mission?

Not for you, but ... yeah. I was just trying to get the other kids like me out.

[and she happened to stumble over him. A rescue of opportunity, but at least she's honest about it.]

[He doesn't get offended. If Steve had been conscious, he would have put himself at the bottom of the rescue list in a heartbeat. It should be clear soon how little he cared for his rescue. Steve looks concerned for a moment, measuring Max up to see if the answer to what he is wondering is evident in her body language before saying what's on his mind.]

They're okay now? You got them out alright?
