[That makes her actually laugh, and once Matt is safely out of harm's way she will release his arm and pull back into her own personal space.]

Oh, I'm sure. "Helping out my blind friend" probably wins him a ton of points with the ladies.

[Her tone is a little dry, as though she's not entirely serious, yet she knows she also speaks the truth at the same time. She remembers so many girls from her club days who would have fawned over both of them.]

[he nods]

It works for him.

[and if the fact that Matt is smiling when he says it, he's not particularly bothered by the fact that, despite the fact he's more likely to take someone home, Foggy has used him for the points factor. it's good for him. the guy needs someone who isn't whatever friends-with-benefits thing he has going with Marci]

[As long as Matt doesn't feel mistreated for it, then Laurel can't really say she cares. It's not really her place to judge what other people do with their best friends when she opts to run around with hers clad in leather and wielding a baton.]

Did this friend opt to not join you in Star City?

[Matt's smile falters a little, at that, and he shakes his head]

He's got the flu. [a beat] We've been networking, every night, to go over case details, and so he can tell me he's dying, but uh ... [he shrugs]

[truth be told, he really doesn't like the idea of leaving Foggy alone for long periods of time. sure, he's taken care of Fisk by now, but the Kitchen still isn't the safest place, and who knows when the next asshole will climb out of the woodworks? what if something happens, while he's gone?]

[To be fair, Star City can be a pretty dangerous place too. Laurel's nervous about having anyone visit their city these days, but she can't bring herself to leave much - unless, of course, it's going to Central City because Team Flash needs them.]

Well, hopefully things will wrap up soon, so you can head back and make sure he recovers.

[Star City might be just as dangerous as the Kitchen, but he'd still feel a lot better if Foggy were here. at least then, he'd be able to keep an eye on him]

[but at any rate, he lets out a breath and nods] Until then, I just get to keep reminding myself that he's in good hands. [he pauses again, before, by way of explanation, offering:] Our secretary's been kind of looking after him.

[Laurel nods with a small "ah" in response, before she smiles softly.]

When I was working at CNRI, we were like that too. We were out in the Glades, so we looked out for each other.

[There's a beat.]

It's one of the things I miss about it, actually. The district attorney's office is a lot less ... personable.

[Mostly because they get murdered a lot.]

[he nods again, this time knowingly]

Landman and Zack was like that, when we was interning there. It's one of the reasons why we didn't take the job they offered us. [among other things, like the fact that they were shady as hell even beyond how they treated their employees. he supposes he can't fault them too much for that, considering their a cooperate power, but well. he does. you should care about who you're representing beyond the money. you should care about your own people]

[She nods in agreement.]

I thought about going into private practice out of CNRI closed, but the DA's office was a much better fit. I'd rather be able to live with myself than be living comfortably.

[he lets out a breath of a laugh, at that]

That'd be the second reason. [a beat] Defending a mob boss who's obviously not on the level really isn't my idea of a good time. [and he's equal parts sorry for and automatically suspicious of whoever ends up running Fisk's defense]

The people we helped at CNRI were people who just couldn't afford a good attorney and getting railroaded by the law. I don't think I could stomach the people who just want to get away with murder because they can.

I'm guessing there are as many people, here, that fit that description as there are in the Kitchen? [people who are getting railroaded, people who are blatant murders, whichever]

The Glades is full of them. It also doesn't help matters that a psychopath tried to destroy it a couple years back.

[he arches his eyebrows at that]

We talking psychopath or psychopath? [he sweeps a hand over the upper part of his face, indicating a mask, to give her a hint as to what he means by that. he knows that he's not the only mask running around (see also: the Avengers), but -- damn, maybe he should have brought his suit]

[Well, that's kind of complicated, because Malcolm does tend to run around with a mask these days, but that's because of the League of Assassins, not because he's a vigilante.]

Just the regular kind. He was a businessman in Star City - a real pillar of the community. Until he blackmailed and coerced his rich friends into helping him build an earthquake machine that killed more than five hundred people.

[she has the League of Assassins, he has the Hand, even if he's not really aware of them, aware that Nobu was one of them. they should totally compare ninja notes, one of these days]

[but at any rate, his eyebrows creep a little higher, here] An earthquake machine? [and she doesn't consider that to be a little beyond garden variety psychopath?] Suddenly, I'm glad the worst thing the Kitchen ever had to worry about was Wilson Fisk.

[Her eyebrows go up because yeah. She heard about Fisk.]

I guess it's ... harder for me to pin him into that box. I've known Malcolm Merlyn my whole life. Moira Queen as well

[Both of whom are dead now - at least as far as the rest of the world is concerned. Malcolm is now the leader of the League of Assassins, but legally dead, and Moira was murdered in front of her children a year later. Moria at least stood trial for her crimes, unlike Malcolm, who essentially got away with it.]

It's hard to see them in the same light as guys like Fisk when it's personal.

[oh, but what happened with Fisk was personal. despite telling himself that, though, he knows it's not the same. Fisk tried to ruin him, kill him, hurt his friends and the Kitchen, but he wasn't and never was someone he would have considered a friend]

[briefly, Matt tries to imagine what it would be like, if Foggy went dark side. he dismisses it quickly, in part because he doesn't want to think about it (he'd probably go with him, Foggy his heart as much as Karen is his drive, or at least not be able to bring himself to try and stop him) and in part because, if he thinks about it too long, his expressions might give away that there's something more to him. never mind the fact that his not adding The Devil of Hell's Kitchen or Daredevil or whatever the hell they're calling him this week to the list of bad things to happen to the Kitchen might have, already]

[regardless, finally, Matt bows his head a little] I'm sorry. [because yes, he can gather that they're dead, and even if they were the bad guys -- well, going back to the mental image of evil!Foggy, he wouldn't want that. he couldn't live with that, even if it was the right thing to do. the only thing to do]

[Laurel has already seen both the worst and the best of most of the people around her. While she will never trust Malcolm Merlyn, she's seen the way he cares for Thea, the way that Moira fought for her children. She knows that there are probably worse monsters in the world, but there is so much bad out there, it's hard to really see what the point of qualifying it is.

That being said, she waves a hand.]

It's in the past. And Star City is working on moving forward.

[but are you, Laurel?]

Well. [he offers her a thin smile as he raises his head again] At least there's that.

[She nods in agreement.]

We're taking it one step at a time.

[A beat, then curiously.]

You know, they were never particularly clear on how they got Fisk. Was it just dumb luck?

A little dumb luck, a little bit of the right people looking into the right things, a little bit of help from the neighborhood Mask. [he pauses, making a so-so gesture] The Devil of Hell's Kitchen or Daredevil -- whatever they're calling him this week.

Ahh. We have a few of those in Star City. Our big two are the Arrow and the Canary, but they've got a whole little club now.

[Which she happens to be a part of but suuuuuuure.]

New York's got it's own club, too, but I'm not sure the Kitchen's Mask is with them? [and he's okay with that. aliens and evil elves and killer robots are a little above his pay grade] I feel like Iron Man flying around, lending him a hand would have been hard to miss, so.

[She laughs a bit at that.]

Hanging out with Tony Stark wouldn't really be the Arrow's style, I'll admit. I'm not sure he really seems like Daredevil's either.

[Especially considering how much Oliver and Ray knocked heads.]
