Today is one of those days. Only instead of blood or mud or whatever else, Dean is covered in cherry syrup. It's what happens when you get into a fight in a sundae shop. Madhura, man.

["Vacation" has always been a bit of a foreign concept to Kate, at least since she joined the force. It isn't that she doesn't have her moments where she wanted to be elsewhere, but it's so easy, at times, to lose herself in her job, and before she knows it she's got months of vacation time saved up and nothing to do with it.

(Except, you know, occasionally sneak off to do some police work that she's not supposed to be doing.)

All the same, she's long overdue for some time to herself - as well as time with Rick - which is why she's got a pile of brochures spread out in front of her, trying to decide what to pick.]

[When being on the run for six years means you missed most of your "formative movie years" (Stiles's words, not hers), it becomes your (boy?)friend's responsibility to catch you up on what you've missed. Cora would roll her eyes at the suggestion, but as far as hanging out goes, movies are easy. She's not expected to talk much, unless it's about the movie, and even then, Stiles covers most of that for her.

In this (relationship?) (friendship?) situation, Stiles is still the more verbal of the two. It's probably better that way.

The point of the matter is, Stiles is determined to catch her up on six years of cinematic mastery, in addition to making sure she's seen what he deems "the essentials," and Cora mostly is just sitting cross-legged on his couch with the popcorn, watching as he sorts through the movies to determine what they're watching next and trying to figure out what this is.

(It's probably just friendship. Friendship is good. Cora needs more friends, a lot more friends, but things with Stiles always feel different than hanging out with Scott or Isaac or Lydia. She doesn't entirely know what to make of that.)

It involves a very lengthy stay in one of their European branches, and while Wes has seen most of Europe before - the benefit of living in it for so long - he has a feeling that Fred hasn't. So the takes the opportunity to give her the grand tour of Paris when they have a free weekend to themselves.]

[In a magical world where we just wildly AU S5 after the demise of Forwood, and That Thing at the end of 3B just didn't happen, Matt follows Tyler out to Beacon Hills because he's looking for something. Probably not a pack, but his best friend just feels the urge to go, and since he and Tyler are on an epic road trip of brotime and self-discovery, Matt goes with.

It's werewolf country. At least that means no vampires.

(Except for, you know, Tyler. Sort of.)

Regardless, when they get there they find out that the thing that dragged them there is the Nematon, which is kind of like a giant supernatural homing beacon, and Matt has a feeling that it's not long before their relatively vampire-free existence turns into something a lot more dangerous, but Matt is also easily distracted and that distraction comes in the form of Allison Argent.

Repeatedly.

(Matt just generally tries to avoid Scott, despite the fact that he's become Tyler's alpha even though "He's not in the pack."

Regardless of the inherent Scott issues, Matt likes Allison. She's smart and sharp and funny and badass in ways that he can't even explain, and just being around her is a tunnel vision he hasn't really felt since Elena. Being with her is awesome. The only problem with it is that they haven't really ... defined it.

Not that things like this need definition, they can just be what they are and labels only really matter to other people, but Matt's had so little, and his life has existed in such shades of gray in the mess that is Mystic Falls, there's a part of him that does need it.

So he takes the opportunity when he sees it. The fact that that opportunity happens to come when they're both sitting with their backs planted against one of the trees in the preserve, a few hundred feet off the ground and in a harpy's nest is irrelevant.]

[Right at the end of her sophomore year, Elena asks her parents to come pick her up from a party and their car goes over Wickery Bridge. However, instead of leaving them in Mystic Falls, trapped in a loop of grief and constant reminders of what they lost, Jenna transfers from Duke to Berkeley, picks up her newly acquired teenage wards and moves them across the country to an equally small town called Beacon Hills.

Oddly enough, they still have this reputation for animal attacks. Huh.

All the same, Jenna enrolls Elena and Jeremy in Beacon Hills High and gives them a nice fresh start. In some ways, Elena is grateful for it. She walks in the front doors of the high school and although so much of it is new and overwhelming, no one knows her as the girl who's parents just died. She misses her friends (Caroline and Matt and Bonnie, and maybe even Tyler), but she knows this is for the best.

It's a second chance. It's a place where people won't be asking her if she's okay, just so that she can lie so that they can feel better. People will only see her as the New Girl, and that's a title she's okay with keeping.

She walks into English, scanning the empty desks for a seat, when she spots an empty desk. She quickly cuts her way through the room, as seats are filling fast and she's about to just sit, when she realizes that she can't have a fresh start if she doesn't make fresh friends. She pauses, turns to the boy sitting in the next desk back, and gives him a small smile.]

Alec has been tracking Elena for hours.

Because she is Elena Gilbert, she is never not in trouble, and because they live in Mystic Falls, the trouble gets bigger and more complicated by the day. So when something fast and huge snatches her off the street and heads right for the woods, Alec is right on it's heels, at least as much as he can keep up.

He doesn't wait for back up, because that's an easy way to lose the trail. He just keeps following it up until it stops. And goes up. His eyes scan up the tree, eyes zooming in as they get further away from the ground, and there, about the length of a football field off the ground, is Elena.

"You gotta be kidding me."

There's an art to casually bumping into the guy you like. You're supposed to be smooth. It's all oh hey, I didn't expect to see you here, only you did, because you've been religiously stalking him on Forsquare for weeks to try and determine his routines and patterns and the places he likes so that you can plan the perfect entrance and be totally cool. You're supposed to be so hip and cool that he has no choice but to plant on on you right on the spot because why wouldn't he? You're the hottest thing since sliced bread. Who wouldn't want to date you?

Approaching the guy you like out of the blue requires confidence and while there are times when Hana Kim has confidence in spades, the one thing that she does not have is luck.

Because after weeks of planning and cyber stalking and plotting, Hana is making her way into a bakery that she knows he frequents and finds herself tumbling into a surprise rabbit hole which was not on her plans for today. Thankfully the surprise it all doesn't make her shift, but it does leave her tumbling, head over heels until she lands on something soft-but-solid, warm-but-cool and she has a very sinking sensation that she and Rafe really need to stop meeting like this.

She very slowly opens one eye, peering down at the person under her, and sighs heavily as she carefully pushes herself up so that she doesn't do any more damage.

"Are you okay? I didn't ... damage anything, did I?"

A small pack of werewolves falls through a hole in the universe right into Cora Hale's lap.

It's a couple of weeks after Derek leaves to go get their mother's claws back from the Calaveras, leaving her on lockdown because they're searching for a she-wolf and Derek, which in his and Peter's mind means they must mean her. So instead of letting her fight for herself, because they're dumb men, they bury her in a hole in South America (not literally, but figuratively), and go off to try and defend her honor themselves.

Cora thinks it's a stupid plan. No one really listens to her.

(It really sucks because Derek said he wasn't going to leave her again, and then he did. She had family again for all of five minutes and now she's regulated to the role of prized treasure, something to be locked in a vault and hidden away when she's not. She's his sister, and this is her family, and she can fight her battles for herself.)

But that isn't the point. The point is that a few weeks after Derek leaves and there's been no word at all from him, a pile of werewolves fall through a hole in the universe and right into Cora's lap.

Hale werewolves.

They're not Hale-Hales. They're not related to her in any way, but they're stranded in a universe where they don't belong, telling her stories of a world that ended and she's so lonely that she takes the risk and lets them stay. Peter would kill her if he knew, and probably so would Derek, but since they're off "protecting" her instead of being here with her, she can't really bring herself to care.

Besides, they're good people, and they need the help. And Cora? Cora needs more friends. She left all of the ones she could have had behind.

Alek is the one she latches on to the most - he's her age, and there's an anger in him that she understands, and it makes him easier to stick close to. Ethan, Adam, Connor, they're all nice, but there's something about Alek that hooks her and draws her in and almost makes her forget that she was abandoned by her family and left behind again.

Their full moons are rougher than hers, so they let her lock them up in the industrial basement to the Hales' Buenos Aires property, standing watch until the moon passes to make sure they don't get out and hurt anyone. When the sun rises, there's usually breakfast and sleep for everyone but this morning she lingers a little longer at the breakfast table, looking at the other young wolf across from her.

If she had grown up as a normal girl, a girl who hasn't lost everything that mattered to her several times over, she might be better at this. For now, she's just staring and trying to figure out the words as her fork plays with her eggs.

"Is it good?"

She means the food.

You tend to lose a lot when the world ends.

In all those dystopian novels and TV shows and movies, it's always power or homes or families or quality of life, but they still have a place that's theirs. They have a spot that they want to rebuild from, a world to break ground on and a place to begin. The refugees from Chicago have none of that, they essentially have the clothes on their back and the hope that maybe, one day, they'd find a place to call their own again.

Ava thinks it's a bit of a long shot but she keeps trying anyway. She catches her rifts and hops through her worlds and hopes that somewhere along the way she'll come out the other side to find the person she's looking for, the one thing that's anchoring her to the edge and keeping her from falling over.

(They didn't start out like this. At first it was just friends reconnecting again, her searching for her best friend and him looking for his little brother. But slowly in jump after jump through the universes it became more and more until it was love and she is fairly certain that whenever they do find him, Alek is going to kill her, but she'll deal with that when it happens.)

She hits the ground rolling a good ten years older than the seventeen year-old kid she was when the world ended, and she scans the area, looking for any kind of immediate sign of him. Sometimes it takes them a while - months, even. This time it was almost a year - to track each other down again, but they usually do. She isn't sure how much time passes for him - she never asks, because she doesn't want to know - but with each time they find each other again she starts the mental countdown for the inevitable separation.

(It's just until they find a world of their own. Ava's a demon, she has all the time in the world to wait, but he doesn't have that long. She knows that. She just has to hope that by the time they do find it, it isn't too late.)

She spots a pair of broad shoulders not too far from her, and a grin splits her face. She's already running, tearing towards him like she's being drawn to him. "Connor!" leaves her lips about halfway there, and as he turns at the sound of his name, she's jumping, legs sliding around his waist and pulling him in for a warm kiss.

It's been almost a year. Let her have her moment.

Sometimes, the rift's tendency to make things literal is a bit ... disturbing.

Case in point: Charlie Wellman is currently covered in maple syrup. Incredibly covered. As in head to toe, irrevocably, deliciously covered in maple syrup. It tends to be what happens when you find yourself dropped through a rabbit hole, into a lake of it. It's sticky and sweet and a little dangerous considering syrup doesn't really run off you the way water does and if they suddenly started drowning then they're really in trouble. You can cough up water. What do you do if your lungs get filled with syrup?

Thankfully, this pool of syrup is rather shallow and while it's hard to move through, he can easily stand and not have it be over his head. Granted, he is considerably taller than his companion, but with a firm arm he can help keep her above the surface of the syrup.

Syrup.

He glances to Lena after a moment, keeping one arm around her waist to keep her steady, before squinting at the shoreline.

"Are those waffle trees?"

[So instead of going to Whittemore, which is a bad life choice, the intrepid Caroline Forbes decides to get as far away from Mystic Falls as humanly possible and sets her sights on Stanford. If the stories Stefan tells are anything to go by, she knows that she's probably going to go to college several times.

She still wants her first time to be worthwhile.

So she schedules her classes and moves into her dorm and does everything the perfect Caroline Forbes way, because that's how she rolls, and tends to edge towards that of the ridiculously over-prepared. So once she can check decorating her room, mapping out her class route and making sure she had all her books, she sets about giving herself a vigorous social schedule.

And that is how she runs into Sam Winchester.

It was some kind of freshman mixer which is totally lame, but totally lame school sanction mixers are the gateways to the more serious parties with things like booze and dumb fratboys she can compel into getting her drinks all night, but for the time being, she's just going to flirt it up with tall, dark and shy over here.

Today in the Continuing Adventures of Shawn and Jules Through the Universe, our daring heroes find themselves in a situation they never thought they'd be in.

Stuck in line at the DMV.

Mind you, this isn't your ordinary trip to the DMV. This Department of Motor Vehicles is a line of intense danger and surprises. There are holes in the floor, trap doors if the attendants find themselves to believe you're stepping out of line, and there are some parts that are even part slides, almost like a life-sized game of Chutes and Ladders.

Shawn isn't entirely sure what he's doing there, but right now he's just leaning very, very close to the one-way mirror across from him, trying to see if he can see what's on the other side.

"Very interesting."

Ava was just starting to settle into New York.

End of the world, suddenly forced to somewhere else, and she's been adjusting. It wasn't particularly well at first, because she was never a Wanderer in the first place so the whole randomly shifting to new worlds at a moment's notice is not exactly her forte, but she's adapting. She likes New York. Her grandmother has loosened the leash a bit so that she can do things like have friends and be part of the world, and there is a very, very adorable photographer that she's been flirting up a storm with, just because she can.

(Hi, Peter. She has no problem ignoring the fact that you look just like her best friend's brother. Ethan is very attractive and so are you.

She misses Alek.)

What she doesn't expect, however, is that rabbit holes have found their way to New York, and one day, while she and Peter are supposed to be heading to a movie, they're suddenly somewhere very much not New York. Also very much not in color.

Everything is grayscale around them and, unfortunately for Ava, surprisingly horizontal. She can feel the cold steel of train tracks against the back of her neck and a rumbling coming from the distance. From beyond the hills, she can see a plume of smoke, and when she goes to move her hands so that she can push off the train tracks, and get the hell out of there, she finds her hands can't move.

She glances down, and she's bound in very tight rope around her middle. Standing over her is a greasy looking man, smoking a cigar and cackling evilly. This is so not how Ava wanted to spend her day, but she also knows if there's any justice in the world, she didn't fall through that rabbit hole alone. She takes a deep breath, tips her head back and screams.

"Peter!"

She really doesn't want to have to use her Calling on this guy. She's not good enough at it yet to make other people feel things that aren't already there, and she's not sensing anything that would work for her here. So she's just going to scream for back up and hope for the best.

The thing about falling through a rift in time and space is that Cami O'Connell is fairly used to weird. She's from New Orleans after all - they are a culture onto themselves, a pocket of occult and flamboyance that meets in a world where the waters could rise up and wash them away at any moment, and in a way, Chicago is the same. It's a little pocket of crazy and she's taking her time to try and understand it as best she can.

What she could do without, however? The constant invasion of other people into her head. To be more specific - other people's emotions, because the rift decided to take her natural talent for empathy and amp it up to eleven. It's frustrating, it's driving her crazy, and with the couple on one side of her apartment having a heated argument the grieving widow next door and the just complete depression coming from the man across the hall, she needs, desperately, to be somewhere else.

Sometimes, it's just too much.

Which is how she finds herself standing at Ethan's front door before she can even think. Sometimes with someone directly with her, she can focus her ability on their emotions, weed out the rest and if they're calm, sometimes she could even manage a decent night's sleep. Ethan is someone she trusts, probably more than anyone else in Chicago, and she does her best to wipe the frustrated tears away as he opens the door, trying not to worry him anything more than she has to.

"I'm sorry. I'm sorry, I should have called, but I just needed to get out for a while, and I didn't know where else to go."

Cecilia is an OBGYN but when you're working in a hospital in Chicago and your ER is overtaxed, you do whatever you can to help process people out. Besides, Cecilia prefers helping people more often than not. It's the do-gooder in her. Aaron teases her for it but she likes to do what she can.

"Good afternoon," she says with a small smile, her thick accent curling around her words. "How can I help you?" She hasn't looked up from her clipboard yet, but the narration thinks that it's highly likely she probably should.

Tamsin is on her last legs.

She knows it, can feel it in the way her body is falling apart. She can't heal. She can barely feed without passing out. There's a part of her that contemplates going in for one last big feed - if she's going to go out, might as well do it with a smile on her face - but there are two big problems with that.

Getting to this particular meal has a few problems attached to it, mainly that a certain unaligned succubus might have a bit of a problem if she just wound up an unstoppable killing machine and let him go over New Orleans, doubting, paranoid and murderous. But Tamsin's Dark Fae for a reason, and Bo's opinion doesn't really matter as much, being as she doesn't really care.

She'll be dead. She won't have to listen to her be judgmental over a history she doesn't understand.

Who she doesn't want to upset, however, is Rebekah. She knows she and her brother may have a complicated history, to say the least, but for the most part, Rebekah is usually on her brother's side, which is mostly the result of a thousand years of familial Stockholm Syndrome. She accepts the abuse because she doesn't want to be alone for all of eternity, and Klaus takes advantage of that because he's a psychopathic bastard who is not above manipulating his own flesh and blood.

It's disgusting.

Rebekah is both the reason that Tamsin wants to break Klaus into a million pieces, make him doubt his own actions so much that in the end he tears his own beating heart out of his chest, but Rebekah is also the reason she doesn't. Because if she did, Rebekah would probably never forgive her, and that? That Tamsin couldn't live with. Even if she doesn't really have that much longer to live.

All the same, she doesn't expect a familiar blond to come walking into her bar, hundreds of miles away from where she's actually supposed to be. She turns, tips her head to the side and frowns.

"Of all the gin joints in all the world." She pauses in consideration. "Or at least I think that's how it goes."

The Guerreras tear through Mystic Falls, and Tyler drags Elena from the place she used to call her home, bloody and screaming. There's really only so much a girl can take before she can't take it anymore, and watching each member of her family systematically die one by one pushes her towards the breaking point faster than most.

Caroline, dead. Stefan, dead. Damon, dead. The only people safe were the humans, because they were human. They weren't the ones that the wolves were after, because they were looking for something and they didn't think the humans would have it.

(She knows that Matt and Jeremy are running. She hopes to God they never look back, because she knows the second they do they're dead.)

Elena survives, though. (She always does.) Tyler drags her out of town because she's the only one he can save, the only one who hadn't been bitten, the only one who is left to save, but he can't get to her before she tears through a squad of werewolves that have scouted their position, and there's a part of her that thinks he may have let her.

Not that she really cares. It's about time she had some actual blood on her hands and she almost likes it. Their fear makes them smell like hard candy with a bitter tang, and she drinks it down like it's her new favorite drink. She wants to bathe in the blood of her enemies, which sounds absolutely cliche, but she hears it's great for her skin.

Point of it is, Elena Gilbert is tired of lying down. She's tired of taking these things that keep happening to her, she's tired of losing, always losing. She's done with being a puppet or a pawn or leverage. But she lets Tyler put her back together, pretends to pull herself into some semblance of sanity again because she knows that's what he needs, but that's not what she needs. What she needs is to wipe the Guerrera werewolves from the face of the map, and she probably won't feel an ounce of remorse when she does.

(She's not turning it off. Not again. The rage is all she needs to keep her pushing forward, keeping the wheels in her head turning. She needs the emotion because if she doesn't have it she loses her focus, and if it makes her a little bit crazy in the process, well. She knew that being a vampire was going to take her sanity a long time ago. She just didn't expect it to happen this soon.)

It's six months after the fact when Elijah finds them, the devil in a twelve hundred dollar suit, offering her he deal of a lifetime. He's ready to let her loose, take the girl that he helped create and turn all that rage and determination lose on the world, but all she has to do is one thing. Protect a little girl. Keep her from becoming a figurehead, a martyr, a tool to be wielded like leverage or a weapon, depending on how the person holding her saw fit.

Elijah wants her to keep Hope from turning into Elena. Elena can't really find herself arguing with that.

But she has her conditions. She won't do it if Tyler can't do it with her, because Tyler is the thing that's keeping her from losing it completely. Elijah agrees, doesn't seem to have an issue with it, which is kind of funny, considering Tyler did try to kill the baby once, but Elena doesn't question having his permission too much to really dig into that. Tyler is the one who's going to take the real convincing.

But she won't do it without him.

She stands in the doorway of his room, knowing that he's heard every word, and waiting for his answer. There's a chance he could yell, say no, whatever the case may be, but whatever it is, she can take it.

In the end, she's still giving him a choice.

After chasing down the final sacrifice, Team Sam and Allison manage to divert the ritual, prevent the rising of a seriously powerful demon and somehow wound up only somewhat covered in mud and other disgusting materials.

Somewhat doesn't mean completely spared, however, which leaves Sam and Allison feeling pretty gross by the time they get back to the motel there's starting a smell starting to develop and Sam? Sam is more than ready to get clean.

He lets them back into his hotel room, because he's ninety percent sure that Lydia would pitch a fit if they got mud and other assorted ick all over her room, before gesturing to the bathroom ahead of them. "You can go first. I should check in with Dean anyway."

Because by now Dean's probably figured out that his brother has skipped out on him and should probably make sure his head hasn't exploded yet.

People fall through rifts all the time. But people don't usually fall through rifts.

It's actually kind of rare, really. The rift tends to not really kill people on impact - it's Chicago that does them in in the end, but occasionally, occasionally a rift won't open quite at ground level and send the newly arrived Wanderer falling through the air at an almost alarming speed. It's actually a whole lot smoother than it should be, almost like something out of a movie, and if he didn't have a scared new Wanderer on his hands (or more like in his arms), he would probably pat himself on the back for that.

Los Angeles descends into chaos and Tess can't get out fast enough.

Not that she's really one to run from a particular problem, but she certainly doesn't want to fall prey to whatever it is that's roaming the streets in the darkness either. She enters the lobby to find a proverbial sea of corpses. She isn't entirely sure if what did this is still there, but she's not waiting to try and find out. She simply cuts through the mess, gun out in front of her, and searches for a familiar face in the darkness. She's not going anywhere until she has Lilah safe.

Or received confirmation that she's dead. Whichever comes first.

He's sitting in the middle of a run down hotel, head in his hands trying to process what he just saw. He's seen a lot of crazy things on the job. He works in New York. They have every kind of freak you can think of. He's never seen someone's face do that.

So he's processing. He's thinking. He's not really sure what he's going to do with this information but eventually he'll get it. Probably. Maybe.
